What is the importance of Old Testament? This week’s episode deals with the argument that Old Testament is in fact, relevant and it is the foundation for the New Testament.[/fusion_text][fusion_separator style_type=”shadow” top_margin=”10″ bottom_margin=”30″ sep_color=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”center” class=”” id=””/][fusion_text]Without Old Testament there won’t be New Testament. In other words, Old Testament is the foundation for the New Testament.

“You search the scriptures… and it is they that testify on my behalf” (John 5:39). These are the words of Jesus Christ. He recognized the authority of the Scripture, which is the Old Testament; He said that these Scriptures testifies about HIM!

Let us note some of the Scriptures that point towards the authority of the Old Testament Scriptures.

The Old Testament was used by Jesus Christ, and also by the apostles. There are several scriptures in the New Testament that refer to the Old Testament as “Scriptures.” Notice John 5:39; 10:35; Acts 8:32; Gal. 3:8; 2 Tim. 3:16.

Not only these Scriptures refer to the Old Testament, but Jesus Himself declared in the synagogue that He Himself was the major theme of the Old Testament and that He was the fulfillment of the Old Testament: “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21).

Also Christ used the phrase “It is written” in Matt. 4:1-11 (the temptation story), three times to indicate the authority of the Old Testament Scripture.

In the Gospel of Matthew, the writer connects the events of the Christ’s life and the Old Testament prophecy, with the statement: “to fulfill what had been spoken.” Note: Matt. 1:22; 2:15, 17, 23; 4:14; 12:17; 13:35; 21:4; 27:9.

The Gospel of John indicates the comparison of Moses and Christ in John 1:17; 3:14; 5:45-47; 6:32; 7:19.

The Apostle Paul, on the other side, who knew the Old Testament well, indicated the authority of the Old Testament in 2 Tim. 3:16, by referring to ALL SCRIPTURES. In fact, Pauline literature indicates the dependance on the Old Testament Scripture.[/fusion_text][fusion_separator style_type=”none” top_margin=”15″ bottom_margin=”15″ sep_color=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”center” class=”” id=””/][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][fusion_checklist icon=”fa-check” iconcolor=”” circle=”” circlecolor=”” size=”13px” class=”custom-list-size” id=””][fusion_li_item icon=”fa-star”]Christ used the Old Testament Scriptures to converse with the Jewish authorities in His days.[/fusion_li_item][fusion_li_item icon=”fa-star”]Christ used the Old Testament Scriptures to indicate its authority in the temptation story.[/fusion_li_item][fusion_li_item icon=”fa-star”]The gospel writers used Old Testament Scriptures in their writings.
